Musnad Ahmad 402 (Book 4, Hadith 4) #34078
Disagreement on Tamattu' Practice

SUMMARY: Uthman and Ali had a disagreement about the practice of tamattu' (doing 'Umrah then exiting ihram until Hajj).

It was narrated that Ibn Harmalah said: I heard Sa'eed ie, Ibn al-Musayyabi say: 'Uthman (رضي الله عنه) went out for Hajj, then when he was partway there, it was said to 'Ali {رضي الله عنه): He ('Uthman has forbidden tamattu' doing 'Umrah then exiting ihram until Hajj'.Ali (رضي الله عنه) said to his companions. When he sets out, set out too. And 'Ali and his companions entered ihram with the intention of doing 'umrah and 'Uthman (رضي الله عنه) did not say anything to him about that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said to him: Have I not been told that you forbade tamattu' by doing 'umrah first? He said. Of course'.Ali said: Did you not hear that the Messenger of Allah did tamattu’?'Uthman said: Of course,

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect different opinions , Follow teachings of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in our lives

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a disagreement between two companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Uthman and Ali. Uthman was on his way to perform Hajj when he heard that Ali and his companions were performing Umrah first before going for Hajj. Uthman forbade this practice as it was against what he believed in. However, Ali argued that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself practiced this method of performing Umrah first before going for Hajj. In the end, both agreed to disagree but respected each other's opinion. This hadith teaches us to respect different opinions even if we do not agree with them and also shows us how important it is to follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in our lives.
