Musnad Ahmad 397 (Book 3, Hadith 7) #34073
Freeing Slaves Fairly

SUMMARY: A person should pay the full price of a slave if they have enough money to do so, and divide the cost among their partners.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah said: "If a person frees his share of a slave, and has enough Money to pay the full price of the slave, a fair price should be worked out for the slave, and his partners should be given their shares, then he may free the slave, otherwise he has freed only what he has freed".

QUICK LESSONS:
Work out a fair price for the slave and divide it among their partners. Strive to be just and equitable in all dealings with others.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about freeing slaves in a fair manner. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that if someone has enough money to free a slave, they should work out a fair price for the slave and divide it among their partners. This means that everyone involved in owning the slave will get an equal share of what is paid for them. It also teaches us that fairness and justice are important values when dealing with others, even when it comes to something as difficult as freeing slaves. We must always strive to be fair and just in our dealings with others, no matter what situation we find ourselves in.
