The Poverty of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Umar mentioning the worldly gains of people and how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was so poor that he could not even find dates to fill his stomach.

It was narrated that Simak bin Harb said: I heard an-Nu'man - ie, bin Basheer - say: 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) mentioned what the people had acquired of worldly gains and said: I saw the Messenger of Allah remaining curled up with hunger pangs all day, unable to find even the worst type of dates with which to fill his stomach.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، وَحَجَّاجٌ، قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النُّعْمَانَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ بَشِيرٍ، يَخْطُبُ قَالَ ذَكَرَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مَا أَصَابَ النَّاسُ مِنْ الدُّنْيَا فَقَالَ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَظَلُّ الْيَوْمَ يَلْتَوِي مَا يَجِدُ دَقَلًا يَمْلَأُ بِهِ بَطْنَهُ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the poverty of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It was narrated by Simak bin Harb that he heard an-Nu'man - ie, bin Basheer - say that Umar mentioned what people had acquired in terms of worldly gains. He then went on to describe how the Messenger of Allah remained curled up with hunger pangs all day and unable to find even the worst type of dates with which to fill his stomach. This hadith serves as a reminder for us all that we should be grateful for our blessings and not take them for granted. It also teaches us humility and reminds us that no matter how much wealth we have or acquire in this world it will never compare to what Allah has given us in terms of faith and guidance.
