Musnad Ahmad 328 (Book 2, Hadith 234) #34009
Stealing Leads to Hell

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned against stealing and reminded his companions that only believers will enter Paradise.

'Umar bin al-Khattab (s) said: On the day of Khaibar, a group of the companions of the Messenger of Allah said: So and so is a martyr, So and so is a martyr, until they passed by a man and said: So and so is a martyr. The Messenger of Allah said: 'No, I saw him being dragged to Hell because of a cloak that he stole from the booty. Go out and call out to the people, "No one will enter Paradise except the believers'. So I went out and called out: No one will enter Paradise except the believers.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of stealing. On the day of Khaibar, a group of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad were discussing who was a martyr and they passed by a man who they said was a martyr. However, the Prophet Muhammad said that he saw him being dragged to hell because he had stolen something from the booty. He then instructed them to go out and call out to people that no one will enter paradise except for believers. This hadith teaches us that stealing is wrong and it has serious consequences in this life as well as in the afterlife. It also reminds us that only those who believe in Allah can enter paradise after death. Therefore it is important for us to stay away from any kind of theft or dishonesty if we want to be successful in this life and hereafter.
