Sahih al-Bukhari 34 (Book 2, Hadith 27) #34
The Characteristics of Hypocrisy

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) warned that anyone who betrays trust, lies, breaks covenants and quarrels in an imprudent manner is a hypocrite.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet said, "Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up. I Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays. II Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie. III Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous. IV Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil and insulting manner".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns us about the characteristics of hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is when someone pretends to be something they are not or when someone acts differently in private than they do in public. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that anyone who betrays trust, lies, breaks covenants and quarrels in an imprudent manner is a hypocrite. Betrayal means to break a promise or agreement with someone else; lying means saying something that isn't true; treachery means breaking a promise made to another person; and quarreling means arguing with someone else in an inappropriate way. We should strive to avoid these behaviors as much as possible so we can stay away from hypocrisy and remain true believers of Islam.
