Musnad Ahmad 292 (Book 2, Hadith 200) #33975
Dividing Wealth According to Islamic Principles

SUMMARY: Wealth should be divided according to the categories of the Book of Allah and closeness to the Messenger of Allah, based on a person's efforts for Islam, seniority in Islam, support for Islam and need.

It was narrated that Malik bin Aws bin al-Hadathan said: 'Umar would swear an oath three times, saying: By Allah, no one has more right to this wealth than anyone else, I have no more right to it than anyone else; there is no Muslim who does not have a share in this wealth, except a slave, but it is to be divided according to our categories in the light of the Book of Allah and our closeness to the Messenger of Allah . Thus it is to be given on the basis of a man's efforts for the sake of Islam, his seniority in Islam, his support for Islam, and his need. By Allah, if I live, a shepherd in the mountains of San'a’ will get his share of that wealth when he is tending his flock.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive towards justice when distributing resources among people regardless if they are close or far away from us; Take into account a person's effort towards religion as well as other factors such as seniority or need when dividing resources so everyone can benefit equally from them; Give out resources fairly without any biasness; Respect others' rights over shared property/resources; Be generous with your possessions/wealth; Help those who are less fortunate than you; Share your blessings with others etc..

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how wealth should be divided among people. Umar would swear an oath three times that no one has more right to this wealth than anyone else and it is to be divided according to our categories in the light of the Book of Allah and our closeness to the Messenger of Allah. This means that wealth should not just be given out randomly but rather it should be distributed based on a person's efforts for Islam, their seniority in Islam, their support for Islam and their need. Even those who are living far away from society such as shepherds in mountains will get their share when they are tending their flock. This hadith teaches us that we must always strive towards justice when distributing resources among people regardless if they are close or far away from us. It also teaches us that we must take into account a person's effort towards religion as well as other factors such as seniority or need when dividing resources so everyone can benefit equally from them.
