Musnad Ahmad 252 (Book 2, Hadith 166) #33941
The Power of Testimony at Death

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of saying the testimony that there is no god but Allah at the time of death.

It was narrated that ash-Sha'bi said: 'Umar passed by Talhah, and he narrated a similar report. He said: 'Umar passed by Talhah and saw him looking worried. He said: Perhaps you are upset because your cousin was appointed (as caliph)? - referring to Abu Bakr. He said: No, but by Allah, I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'I know a word which, if a man says it when he is dying, it will be light in the record of his deeds, or he will find comfort in it at the time of death'. 'Umar said: I will tell you of it; it is the word that he wanted his paternal uncle to say, the testimony that there is no god but Allah. He said: It is as if a great burden has been lifted from me. He said: You are right. If he had known anything better that it, he would have instructed him to say it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the power of faith in one's life, even in death. It was narrated by ash-Sha'bi that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab passed by Talhah and saw him looking worried. He asked if it was because his cousin Abu Bakr was appointed as caliph, to which Talhah replied no. He then told 'Umar that he heard Prophet Muhammad say that if a man says a certain word when he is dying, it will be light in his record or bring him comfort at the time of death. Umar then revealed this word to be "there is no god but Allah". Upon hearing this, Talhah said it felt like a great burden had been lifted from him and Umar agreed with him saying if Prophet Muhammad knew anything better than this he would have instructed his uncle to say it. This hadith teaches us about the power of faith and how important it is for us to remember our Lord even when we are facing our last moments on earth. It also shows us how comforting faith can be during difficult times such as death or any other hardship we may face in life.
