The Importance of Following the Sunnah

SUMMARY: A Christian man who converted to Islam wanted to go for jihad, but was advised to start with Hajj. He was mocked by two men while reciting Talbiyah, and 'Umar told him that he had been guided to the Sunnah of the Prophet.

It was narrated frorn Abu Wa'il that a man who was a Christian and was known as as-Subayy bin Ma'bad became Muslim and wanted to go for jihad. It was said to him: Start with Hajj. So he went to al-Ash'ari, who told him to enter ihram for Hajj and 'Umrah together. So he did that, and whilst he was reciting the Talbiyah,Zaid bin Soohan and Salman bin Rabee'ah passed by him, and one of them said to the other. This one is more misguided than his family's camel. As-Subayy heard them and that upset him. When he arrived he went to 'Umar and told him about that, 'Umar رضي الله عنه said to him: You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ. He the narrator said: On another occasion I heard him say: You have been helped to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet.
حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، أَخْبَرَنِي سَيَّارٌ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا، كَانَ نَصْرَانِيًّا يُقَالُ لَهُ الصُّبَيُّ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ أَسْلَمَ فَأَرَادَ الْجِهَادَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ ابْدَأْ بِالْحَجِّ فَأَتَى الْأَشْعَرِيَّ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يُهِلَّ بِالْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ جَمِيعًا فَفَعَلَ فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ يُلَبِّي إِذْ مَرَّ يَزِيدُ بْنُ صُوحَانَ وَسَلْمَانُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا لِصَاحِبِهِ لَهَذَا أَضَلُّ مِنْ بَعِيرِ أَهْلِهِ فَسَمِعَهَا الصُّبَيُّ فَكَبُرَ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ أَتَى عُمَرَ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ هُدِيتَ لِسُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ قَالَ وَسَمِعْتُهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى يَقُولُ وُفِّقْتَ لِسُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a Christian man who converted to Islam and wanted to go for jihad. He was advised by al-Ash'ari to enter ihram for Hajj and 'Umrah together. While he was reciting Talbiyah, two men passed by him and mocked him which made him upset. When he went to 'Umar about it, 'Umar told him that he had been guided towards following the Sunnah of his Prophet ﷺ . This hadith emphasizes on how important it is for Muslims to follow the teachings of their beloved Prophet ﷺ in order for them be successful in their journey towards Allah SWT's pleasure. It also teaches us that we should not mock or belittle anyone because we do not know what Allah SWT has planned for them or what they are going through in life. We should always be kind and respectful towards others regardless of their religion or beliefs as this is what our beloved Prophet ﷺ taught us through his words and actions throughout his life time.
