I said: Masrooq bin al-Ajda''.Umar said: I heard the Messenger of Allah saying, 'Al- Ajda' is a devil ie the word Al-Ajda' has a bad meaning; rather you are Masrooq bin 'Abdur-Rahman'.Amir said: I saw his name written in the Deewan; Masrooq bin 'Abdur-Rahman. I said: What is this? He said. This is what 'Umar رضي الله عنه called me.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of changing one's name if it has a bad meaning. Umar ibn Al Khattab heard Prophet Muhammad say that Al Ajda was a devil and so he changed Masrook's name from Masrook ibn Al Ajda to Masrook ibn Abdur Rahman. This shows us that we should be careful when choosing names for our children and make sure they have good meanings. It also teaches us that we should not be ashamed or embarrassed to change our names if they have negative connotations associated with them. We should take pride in having good names and strive to keep them pure and untainted by any negative associations.
