Musnad Ahmad 176 (Book 2, Hadith 93) #33868
Kissing the Black Stone

SUMMARY: Umar kissed the Black Stone, even though he knew it was just a stone, because he had seen the Prophet Muhammad kissing it.

It was narrated that 'Abis bin Rabee'ah said: I saw 'Umar kissing the Black Stone and saying; I am kissing you and I know that you are just a stone; if I had not seen the Messenger of Allah kissing you, I would not have kissed you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow your faith faithfully; Respect those who have come before you in their faith; Emulate examples set by prophets; Honor religious symbols like black stones.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith of 'Abis bin Rabee'ah tells us about how Umar kissed the Black Stone, even though he knew it was just a stone. This is because he had seen the Prophet Muhammad kissing it and wanted to follow his example. This shows us that we should be willing to do things that we may not understand or agree with if they are part of our faith and have been done by our Prophet. It also teaches us to respect and honor those who have come before us in their faith and practice. We can learn from their examples and strive to emulate them in our own lives.
