Musnad Ahmad 168 (Book 2, Hadith 85) #33860
Intention is Key to Success

SUMMARY: The deeds of a person are judged by their intentions and they will only receive the reward for what they intended.

Umar said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Deeds are but by intentions and each man will have but that which he intended. If a man's migration was for the sake of Allah, then his migration was for that for which he migrated, but if his migration was to achieve some worldly aim or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for which he migrated'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Have good intentions when doing any deed . Strive towards pleasing Allah in all aspects of life . Do small deeds with sincerity and good intention .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that our deeds are judged based on our intentions. If we do something with the intention of pleasing Allah, then we will be rewarded for it in the hereafter. However, if we do something with a worldly aim or to gain some benefit, then that is what we will be rewarded for. This teaches us that it is important to have good intentions when doing any deed as this will determine whether or not it is accepted by Allah and whether or not we receive its reward in the hereafter. It also encourages us to strive towards pleasing Allah in all aspects of our lives and reminds us that even small deeds can have great rewards if done with sincerity and good intention.
