Musnad Ahmad 98 (Book 2, Hadith 17) #33792
Mercy and Forgiveness in Parent-Child Relationships

SUMMARY: A father killed his son and was brought to 'Umar for judgement. Umar decided not to execute the father due to a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which stated that no father should be executed in retaliation for killing his son.

It was narrated that Mujahid said: A man struck a son of his with a sword and killed him. The matter was referred to 'Umar and he said. Were it not that I heard the Messenger of Allah say, "No father should be executed in retaliation for killing his son'. I would have executed you before you left.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy towards your children even if they have done something wrong instead of punishing them harshly or taking away their lives .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about mercy and forgiveness when it comes to parent-child relationships. It is narrated by Mujahid that a man struck his son with a sword and killed him, so the matter was referred to 'Umar, one of the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Umar decided not to execute the father due to a hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which stated that no father should be executed in retaliation for killing his son. This shows us how important mercy and forgiveness are when it comes to parent-child relationships, even if one has committed an act as serious as murder. We can learn from this hadith that parents should show mercy towards their children even if they have done something wrong, instead of punishing them harshly or taking away their lives. Furthermore, we can also learn from this hadith that justice must always be tempered with mercy; even though justice must prevail, there is still room for compassion and understanding when dealing with people who have made mistakes or committed crimes.
