Rulings on Nafl Prayer, Ghusl and Menstruation

SUMMARY: The hadith explains the rulings of nafl prayer in one's house, ghusl in the case of janabah and what a man may do with his wife when she is menstruating.

Shu'bah said: I heard 'Asim bin 'Amr al-Bajali narrate from one of those who asked 'Umar bin al-Khattab. We have come to you to ask you about three things: A man's nafl prayer in his house, Ghusl in the case of janabah, and what it is appropriate for a man to do with his wife when she is menstruating. He said: Are you magicians? You have asked me about something that no one has asked me about since I asked the Messenger of Allah about it, and he said: 'A man's nafl prayer in his house is light, so whoever wishes, let him illuminate his house'. And he said with regard to ghusl in the case of janabah: 'Let him wash his private parts, then do wudoo', then pour water over his head three times'. And he said concerning the menstruating woman: 'The Husband may enjoy whatever is above the izar (waist wrapper)'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the rulings related to nafl prayer, ghusul in the case of janabah and what a man may do with his wife when she is menstruating. It is narrated that Shu'bah heard Asim bin Amr al-Bajali narrate from one of those who asked Umar bin Al-Khattab about these matters. Umar then referred them to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who said that a man's nafil prayer in his house is light so whoever wishes can illuminate their house with it. He also said that for ghusul in the case of janaba, one should wash their private parts then do wudoo followed by pouring water over their head three times. Lastly he said concerning a menstruating woman that her husband may enjoy whatever is above her waist wrapper or Izar. This hadith teaches us to be mindful about our religious obligations such as performing nawfil prayers at home and following proper rituals for ghusul after janaba as well as being respectful towards our spouses during their menstrual cycle by refraining from certain activities which are not permissible during this time period according to Islamic teachings.
