Resolve disputes peacefully without introducing any changes or taking anything away from what has been decided before by previous leaders or authorities in an Islamic context

This hadith speaks to the importance of resolving disputes in an Islamic context. When a dispute arose between al-'Abbas and 'Ali concerning something that the Messenger of Allah left behind, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman all handled it differently. Abu Bakr said he would not introduce any changes to what was left by the Prophet. Umar said he would not change what Abu Bakr did not change either. However, when Uthman was appointed as caliph, Ibn Abbas feared that he might take it back so he urged al-'Abbas to give it to Ali which eventually happened. This hadith teaches us that disputes should be resolved peacefully without introducing any changes or taking anything away from what has been decided before by previous leaders or authorities in an Islamic context. It also teaches us about respecting authority figures such as caliphs who have been appointed by God's will for a certain period of time.
