Protection from Satan's Whispers

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of saying certain words to protect oneself from the whispers of Satan.

It was narrated from Muhammad bin Jubair bin Mut'im that 'Uthman said: I wish that I had asked the Messenger of Allah what would save us from what the Shaitan whispers into our hearts. Abu Bakr said: I asked him about that and he said: 'What can save you from that is to say what I told my uncle to say but he did not say it'.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ، مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الْحُسَامِ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، عَنْ أَبِي الْحُوَيْرِثِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ تَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَاذَا يُنْجِينَا مِمَّا يُلْقِي الشَّيْطَانُ فِي أَنْفُسِنَا فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَدْ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ يُنْجِيكُمْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ أَنْ تَقُولُوا مَا أَمَرْتُ عَمِّي أَنْ يَقُولَهُ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of protection against the whispers of Shaitan. It was narrated by Muhammad bin Jubair bin Mut'im and Abu Bakr that Uthman said he wished he asked Prophet Muhammad what would save them from Shaitan's whispers. To this, Abu Bakr replied that Prophet Muhammad had told his uncle a certain phrase which could have saved him but unfortunately his uncle did not say it. The phrase has not been mentioned in this hadith but it serves as a reminder for us to be mindful of our words and actions so we can protect ourselves from Shaitan's influence. We should also remember that Allah is always with us and He will help us if we turn towards Him in repentance and faithfulness.
