Sunan Ibn Majah 4267 (Book 37, Hadith 168) #33623
The Horrors of the Grave

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the grave being the first stage of the Hereafter and how it is a horrible scene.

It was narrated that Hani’ the freed slave of 'Uthman bin 'Affan, said: "When 'Uthman bin 'Affan stood beside a grave, he would weep until his beard became wet. It was said to him: 'You remember Paradise and Hell, and you do not weep, but you weep for this?’ He said: 'The Messenger of Allah said: "The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. Whoever is delivered from it, what comes after it is easier. If he is not delivered from it, then what comes after it is harder.’" He said that the Messenger of Allah said: "I have never seen any horrible scene but the grave is more horrible".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how grave is the first stage of the hereafter and how it can be a very horrible scene. It was narrated by Hani who was a freed slave of Uthman bin Affan. Uthman bin Affan used to weep when he stood beside a grave until his beard became wet. When asked why he wept for this but not for Paradise or Hellfire, he replied that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that whoever is delivered from it will have an easier time in what comes after it and if they are not delivered from it then what comes after will be harder. Prophet Muhammad also said that he has never seen any horrible scene but that grave is more horrible than all other scenes. This hadith teaches us to remember death and prepare ourselves for our journey in life so we can have an easier time in our afterlife as well as to fear Allah's punishment if we do not follow His commands.
