Sunan Ibn Majah 4264 (Book 37, Hadith 165) #33620
Loving and Hating to Meet Allah

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that Allah loves those who love to meet Him and hates those who hate to meet Him. It also explains that the feeling of hating to meet Allah is only at the moment of death, but if one is given glad tidings of mercy and forgiveness from Allah, they will love to meet Him.

It was narrated from 'Aishah that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him, and whoever hates to meet Allah, Allah hates to meet him". It was said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, does hating to meet Allah mean hating to meet death? For all of us hate death". He said: "No. Rather that is only at the moment of death. But if he is given the glad tidings of the mercy and forgiveness of Allah, he loves to meet Allah and Allah loves to meet him; and if he is given the tidings of the punishment of Allah, he hates to meet Allah and Allah hates to meet him".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of loving and hating in relation to meeting Allah. It tells us that if we love meeting Allah, He will also love meeting us; however, if we hate meeting Him, He will also hate meeting us. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ clarified that this feeling of hatred only occurs at the moment of death when one is given news about their fate in the afterlife. If one is told they are forgiven by God's mercy and grace, then they will be filled with joy and look forward to their reunion with God. On the other hand, if someone receives news about punishment for their sins then they may feel fear or dread upon hearing it. In either case, it is important for believers to remember that God's mercy surpasses His wrath so no matter what our fate may be in this life or hereafter we should always strive for His pleasure through good deeds and faithfulness in order for our reunion with Him be a joyful one.
