Sunan Ibn Majah 4244 (Book 37, Hadith 145) #33600
The Power of Repentance and Forgiveness

SUMMARY: Repentance and seeking forgiveness can help cleanse the heart from sin.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "When the believer commits sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents and gives up that sin and seeks forgiveness, his heart will be polished. But if (the sin) increases, (the black spot) increases. That is the Ran that Allah mentions in His Book: "Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn". 83:14

Seek repentance for your wrongdoings
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the power of repentance and forgiveness in cleansing one's heart from sin. It is narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said that when a believer commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. However, if he repents and seeks forgiveness for his sins, then his heart will be polished again. The hadith also refers to a verse in the Quran which states that on their hearts is the Ran which they used to earn through their sins. This teaches us that we should always seek repentance for our wrongdoings as it can help us cleanse our hearts from any darkness caused by our sins.
