Sunan Ibn Majah 4227 (Book 37, Hadith 128) #33583
The Intention Behind Actions

SUMMARY: Actions are determined by the intention behind them, and one will only receive the reward for what they intended.

'Alqamah bin Waqqas (said) that he heard 'Umar bin Khattab, when he was addressing the people, saying: "I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Actions are but by the intention and every man will have but that which he intended. So he whose emigration was for Allah and His Messenger, his emigration was for Allah and His Messenger. But he whose emigration was for some worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, his emigration was for that which he migrated".

QUICK LESSONS:
Have good intentions when performing any action

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that our actions are determined by our intentions. Our intentions can be either good or bad, and we will only receive rewards for those actions which were done with good intentions. For example, if someone migrates to a new place for worldly gain or to marry someone, then their migration is not considered as an act of worship and they will not receive any reward from Allah for it. However, if someone migrates with the intention of pleasing Allah and His Messenger then their migration is considered an act of worship and they will be rewarded accordingly. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to have good intentions in all our actions so that we can reap its rewards in this life and in the hereafter.
