Sunan Ibn Majah 4217 (Book 37, Hadith 118) #33573
The Path to Devotion and Gratitude

SUMMARY: Be cautious, content, loving, neighborly and moderate in laughter to be the most devoted and grateful believer.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "O Abu Hurairah, be cautious, and you will be the most devoted of people to Allah. Be content, and you will be the most grateful of people to Allah. Love for people what you love for yourself, and you will be a (true) believer. Be a good neighbor to your neighbors, and you will be a (true) Muslim. And laugh little, for laughing a lot deadens the heart".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be cautious of your actions; Be content; Love others; Be a good neighbour; Laugh moderately

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how we can become the most devoted and grateful believers of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is advising Abu Hurairah on how he can achieve this goal by being cautious of his actions, content with what Allah has given him, loving towards others as he loves himself, being a good neighbor to those around him and laughing moderately. Being cautious means guarding ourselves from doing any wrong or sinful acts that will displease Allah. Contentment means being satisfied with whatever situation we are in because it was predetermined by Allah who knows best what is best for us. Loving others as we love ourselves means treating them kindly and compassionately just like we would want them to treat us if our roles were reversed. Being a good neighbor involves helping out those around us when they need it or even just having friendly conversations with them so that everyone feels comfortable in their environment. Lastly, laughing moderately means not going overboard with laughter because too much laughter can lead to hardening of the heart which will make it difficult for us to feel empathy towards other people’s situations or hardships they may be facing in life. All these values combined will help us become more devoted believers of Allah who are also grateful for all His blessings upon us!
