Sunan Ibn Majah 4109 (Book 37, Hadith 10) #33465
Contentment in Simplicity

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ was content with his simple lifestyle and did not need anything more than what he had.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said: "The Prophet lay down on a reed mat, and it left marks on his skin. I said: 'May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah! If you had told us we would have provided you with something that would save you this trouble.’ The Messenger of Allah said: 'What is there between myself and the world? This world and I are just like a rider who stops to rest beneath the shade of a tree then goes and leaves it.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Be content with what you have; Focus on spiritual matters rather than worldly possessions; Appreciate simplicity in life; Do not strive for materialistic things as they are temporary; Live within your means; Spend wisely; Do not overindulge or waste resources unnecessarily .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet's contentment with his simple lifestyle. He was so content that he was willing to sleep on a reed mat which left marks on his skin. When 'Abdullah saw this, he offered to provide something better for the Prophet but the Prophet refused and said that there is nothing between himself and the world. He compared himself to a rider who stops beneath a tree for shade then moves on without taking anything from it. This teaches us that we should be content with what we have and not strive for worldly possessions as they are temporary and will eventually be left behind when our time comes. We should focus instead on spiritual matters which will benefit us in both this life and the next.
