Sunan Ibn Majah 4080 (Book 36, Hadith 155) #33435
The People of Gog and Magog

SUMMARY: This hadith speaks of the people of Gog and Magog who will dig until they can almost see the sun, but Allah will put it back stronger than before. When their time has come, they will come out to drink all the water and shoot arrows towards the sky. However, Allah will send a worm in their necks which will kill them and the beasts of earth will grow fat on their flesh.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "Gog and Magog people dig every day until, when they can almost see the rays of the sun, the one in charge of them says: "Go back and we will dig it tomorrow". Then Allah puts it back, stronger than it was before. (This will continue) until, when their time has come, and Allah wants to send them against the people, they will dig until they can almost see the rays of the sun, then the one who is in charge of them will say: "Go back, and we will dig it tomorrow if Allah wills'. So they will say: "If Allah wills". Then they will come back to it and it will be as they left it. So they will dig and will come out to the people, and they will drink all the water. The people will fortify themselves against them in their fortresses. They will shoot their arrows towards the sky and they will come back with blood on them, and they will say: "We have defeated the people of earth and dominated the people of heaven". Then Allah will send a worm in the napes of their necks and will kill them thereby'." The Messenger of Allah said: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, the beasts of the earth will grow fat on their flesh".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for God's power & authority over life & death .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about a group known as Gog and Magog who are mentioned in many religious texts. They are said to be a powerful people who would dig every day until they could almost see the sun's rays. However, Allah would put it back stronger than before so that when their time comes, they can emerge from where they were digging to attack people on earth. They would shoot arrows towards heaven believing that they have defeated both those on earth and those in heaven but Allah would send a worm into their necks which kills them all off. The beasts of earth then grow fat on their flesh as punishment for what they did wrong. This hadith teaches us that no matter how powerful we may think we are or how much we believe we have achieved something great, ultimately it is only God who has control over everything in this world including our lives and our deaths. We should always remember this fact so that we do not become arrogant or proud with our accomplishments because ultimately God is still greater than us all!
