Speaking Truth to Unjust Rulers

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of speaking truth to an unjust ruler.

It was narrated that Abu Umamah said: "A man came to the Messenger of Allah at the first pillar and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which Jihad is best?’ but he kept quiet. When he saw the second Pillar, he asked again, and he kept quiet. When he stoned 'Aqabah Pillar, he placed his foot in the stirrup, to ride, and said: 'Where is the one who was asking?’ (The man) said: 'Here I am, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: 'A word of truth spoken to an unjust ruler.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak up for what is right and true, stand up for justice, courageously speak out against injustice regardless of power dynamics involved .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of speaking truth even when faced with an unjust ruler. It was narrated by Abu Umamah that a man asked the Prophet Muhammad which type of jihad was best, but he kept quiet until they reached 'Aqabah Pillar. At this point, he placed his foot in the stirrup and asked where the man who asked him was. When he replied, he said that a word of truth spoken to an unjust ruler is best. This hadith teaches us that we should always speak up for what is right and true even if it means going against those in power who are not just or fair. We should never be afraid to stand up for what we believe in and speak out against injustice no matter how powerful our opponents may be.
