Sunan Ibn Majah 3994 (Book 36, Hadith 69) #33349
Following the Ways of Those Before Us

SUMMARY: This hadith is about following the ways of those who came before us, and how we should be careful not to follow them blindly.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "You will most certainly follow the ways of those who came before you, arm’s length by arm’s length, forearm’s length by forearm’s length, hand span by hand span, until even if they entered a hole of a mastigure (a small lizard) (lizard) you will enter it too". They said: "O Messenger of Allah, (do you mean) the Jews and the Christians?" He said: "Who else?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before taking action; consider consequences; be mindful when making decisions; avoid blind imitation or following without thoughtfulness.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of being mindful when it comes to following in the footsteps of those who have come before us. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was warning his followers that they should not blindly follow in the footsteps of others, but rather take caution and think carefully about what they are doing. He used a metaphor to illustrate this point, saying that if people were to enter a hole made by a small lizard, then we too would enter it. By this he meant that if people were doing something wrong or unwise, then we should be careful not to do it as well. We must always think carefully about our actions and make sure that they are wise and beneficial for ourselves and for society at large.
