Hypocrisy in Front of Rulers

SUMMARY: It is wrong to say one thing in front of a ruler and something else when leaving.

It was narrated that Abu Sha’tha said: "It was said to Ibn 'Umar: 'We enter upon our rulers and say one thing, and when we leave we say something else.’ He said: 'At the time of the Messenger of Allah , we used to regard that as hypocrisy.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest with your rulers , Show respect even if you disagree .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of being honest and sincere with rulers. It was narrated by Abu Shatha that Ibn 'Umar was asked about people who say one thing to their rulers while they are present and then something else when they leave. Ibn 'Umar replied that during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), this kind of behavior was considered as hypocrisy or munafiqah. This hadith teaches us that we should always be honest with our rulers no matter what situation we are in. We should not pretend to agree with them if we do not believe in what they are saying or doing, but at the same time, it is important to respect them and show courtesy even if we disagree with them. We should also remember that Allah knows our intentions so it is important for us to stay true to ourselves and speak honestly without fear or favoritism towards anyone.
