Kindness and Mercy of the Prophet

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ showed kindness and mercy to a woman who had hurt his son, Husain or Hasan.

It was narrated that Qabus said: "Umm Fadl said: 'O Messenger of Allah! It is as if I saw (in a dream) one of your limbs in my house.’ He said: 'What you have seen is good. Fatimah will give birth to a boy and you will breastfeed him.’ Fatimah gave birth to Husain or Hasan, and I breastfed him with the milk of Qutham.’ She said: 'I brought him to the Prophet and placed him in his lap, and he urinated, so I struck him on the shoulder". The Prophet said: "You have hurt my son, may Allah have mercy on you".

QUICK LESSONS:
Showing kindness even when wronged personally

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the kindness and mercy of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In this hadith, Umm Fadl saw a dream in which one of the limbs of the Prophet ﷺ was in her house. The Prophet ﷺ told her that what she saw was good, as it meant that Fatimah would give birth to a boy soon. When Fatimah gave birth to either Husain or Hasan, Umm Fadl breastfed him with milk from Qutham. She then brought him to the Prophet ﷺ and placed him on his lap, but he urinated so she struck him on his shoulder out of instinctive reaction. Despite this, instead of getting angry at her for hurting his son, he showed mercy towards her by saying “You have hurt my son; may Allah have mercy on you”. This shows us how kind and merciful our beloved prophet Muhammad ﷺ was even when someone wronged him personally; he still chose to show them compassion instead of anger or revenge.
