Sunan Ibn Majah 3906 (Book 35, Hadith 14) #33260
Types of Dreams and How to Respond

SUMMARY: Dreams can be from Allah, from a person's own thoughts, or from Satan. If the dream is good, it can be shared with others but if it is bad, it should not be shared and prayer should be performed.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: "Dreams are of three types: Glad tidings from Allah, what is on a person’s mind, and frightening dreams from Satan. If any of you sees a dream that he likes, let him tell others of it if he wishes, but if he sees something that he dislikes, he should not tell anyone about it, and he should get up and perform prayer".

QUICK LESSONS:
Tell people about good dreams if desired .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that dreams can come in three forms; glad tidings from Allah, what is on a person's mind, or frightening dreams from Satan. If someone has a dream that they like they are allowed to share it with others if they wish but if the dream is something that makes them feel uncomfortable then they should not tell anyone about it and instead perform prayer. This hadith teaches us to take our dreams seriously and to always turn to prayer when we are feeling scared or anxious about something. It also reminds us of the importance of being mindful of what we share with others as some things may be better kept private.
