Seeking Refuge with Allah During Travel

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) seeking refuge from Allah when travelling and returning, from hardships, sorrows, decrease after increase, wronged people's prayers and calamities befalling his family or wealth.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Sarjis said: "The Messenger of Allah used to say" – and (one of the narrators) 'Abdur-Rahim said: "he used to seek refuge" – "when he traveled: 'Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’tha’is-safar, wa ka’abatil-munqalab, wal-hawri ba’dal-kawr, wa da’watil-mazlum, wa su’il-manzari fil-ahli wal-mal (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the hardships of travel and the sorrows of return, from decrease after increase, from the prayer of the one who has been wronged, and seeing some calamity befall my family or wealth).’" (One of the narrators) Abu Mu’awiyah added: "And when he returned he said likewise".

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek refuge with God during difficult times .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Abdullah bin Sarjis and Abdur-Rahim tells us that Prophet Muhammad used to seek refuge with Allah when he travelled. He would say “Allahumma inni audhu bika min wathais safar” which means “O Allah I seek refuge in you from the hardships of travel”. He also sought protection from sorrows of return, decrease after increase, prayer of a wronged person and calamities befalling his family or wealth. When he returned home he would also repeat this same dua for protection against these things. This hadith teaches us that we should always turn to Allah for help in times of difficulty as He is our protector and provider who will never let us down if we put our trust in Him alone. We should also remember to thank Him for His blessings upon us no matter how small they may seem because it is only through His mercy that we are able to experience them at all!
