Sahih al-Bukhari 3476 (Book 60, Hadith 143) #3321
The Importance of Unity

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of unity and avoiding differences in opinion.

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud: I heard a person reciting a (Qur'anic) Verse in a certain way, and I had heard the Prophet reciting the same Verse in a different way. So I took him to the Prophet and informed him of that but I noticed the sign of disapproval on his face, and then he said, "Both of you are correct, so don't differ, for the nations before you differed, so they were destroyed".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for unity and avoid differences in opinion as much as possible. Respect different opinions even if they are not your own.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of unity and avoiding differences in opinion. It was narrated by Ibn Mas'ud who heard a person reciting a Quranic verse differently than how he had heard the Prophet Muhammad recite it. He took this person to the Prophet Muhammad who then said that both were correct but that they should not differ as this is what caused destruction for nations before them. This teaches us that we should strive for unity and avoid differences in opinion as much as possible so we can prevent destruction from befalling us. We must also remember that even if two people have different opinions on something, both can still be right and valid at the same time.
