Sunan Ibn Majah 3760 (Book 33, Hadith 104) #33114
The Dangers of Poetry

SUMMARY: Filling one's mind with poetry is worse than filling one's stomach with pus.

It was narrated from Sad bin Abu Waqas that the Prophet said: "If a man were to fill his stomach completely with pus until it destroyed him, that would be better for him than filling (his mind) with poetry".

Fill your mind positive and beneficial thoughts instead of negative or unhelpful ones such as those found in some forms of poetry.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns us against the dangers of filling our minds with poetry. It was narrated by Sad bin Abu Waqas that the Prophet said that it would be better for a person to fill their stomach completely with pus until it destroyed them than to fill their mind with poetry. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful about what we allow ourselves to think about and focus on. We should strive to fill our minds with positive and beneficial thoughts rather than negative or unhelpful ones such as those found in some forms of poetry. We should also remember that what we think has an effect on how we act and behave in life so it is important to make sure our thoughts are good ones.
