Sunan Ibn Majah 3753 (Book 33, Hadith 97) #33107
Appropriate Storytelling

SUMMARY: It is not appropriate to tell stories for the purpose of exhortation unless it is done by a ruler, one appointed by a ruler, or a show-off.

It was narrated from Amr bin Shuaib, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah said: "No one tells the stories to the people (for the purpose of exhortation) except a ruler, one appointed by a ruler, or a show-off".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when telling stories; Ensure your intentions are pure; Respect authority figures; Speak humbly; Speak modestly
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that it is not appropriate to tell stories for the purpose of exhortation unless it is done by a ruler, one appointed by a ruler or someone who does so out of show-off. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was teaching us that we should be careful when telling stories and only do so if we are in an authoritative position or if we are doing it out of humility and modesty. We should also be aware that some people may use storytelling as an opportunity to boast about themselves and their accomplishments which can lead to pride and arrogance. Therefore, this hadith serves as an important reminder for us all to be mindful when telling stories and ensure that our intentions are pure.
