Sunan Ibn Majah 3714 (Book 33, Hadith 58) #33068
Responding to Sneezing

SUMMARY: It is permissible to respond to a person who sneezes three times, but if they sneeze more than that, it may be an indication of a cold.

It was narrated from Ilyas bin Salamah bin Akwa' that his father said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'The one who sneezes may be responded to three times; if he sneezes more than that, he has a cold'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Respond with kindness when someone else sneezes up to 3 times
EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith states that when someone sneezes, it is permissible to respond three times. This response can be in the form of saying “Yarhamuk Allah” which translates to “May Allah have mercy on you”. If the person continues to sneeze more than three times, then this could be an indication of a cold or other illness and should be taken seriously. This hadith teaches us about being considerate and caring towards others by responding with kindness when they sneeze. It also reminds us that we should take care of our health and pay attention if we experience any unusual symptoms such as excessive sneezing.
