Sunan Ibn Majah 3676 (Book 33, Hadith 20) #33030
Accepting Hospitality

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised people to accept hospitality from those who offer it, and to take what is due if they do not.

It was narrated that Uqbah bin Amir said: "We said to the Messenger of Allah: ' You send us and we stay with people who do not show us any hospitality. WHat do you think of that?' The MEssenger of Allah said: 'If you stay with people and they give you what a guest deserves, then accept it. If they do not do that , then take from them what they should have offered, which a guest is entitled to'."

Be generous and hospitable towards guests; Respect their rights; Be grateful for whatever we receive from others; Accept whatever is offered in terms of hospitality.

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked about how to handle hospitality when travelling. He advised that if someone offers you hospitality, then you should accept it gratefully. However, if they do not offer any hospitality then you are entitled to take what is due for a guest. This hadith teaches us the importance of being generous and hospitable towards guests as well as respecting their rights when we are guests ourselves. It also encourages us to be grateful for whatever we receive from others and not expect too much in return.
