Hair Length in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet saw Wail bin Hujr with long hair and told him bad news, but then clarified that he did not mean him and that it was better for him to cut his hair short.

It was narrated that Wa’il bin Hujr said: "The Prophet saw me when I had long hair. He said: 'Bad news, bad news!’ So I went away and cut it short. Then the Prophet saw me and said: 'I did not mean you, but this is better.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings regarding appearance

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the length of one's hair according to Islamic teachings. The Prophet saw Wail bin Hujr with long hair and told him bad news, which made Wail worry. However, the Prophet clarified that he did not mean Wail himself when he said "bad news" but rather meant that it was better for him to cut his hair short. This hadith teaches us the importance of following Islamic teachings regarding our appearance, as well as being mindful of how we might make others feel when we speak to them. It also shows us the importance of clarifying what we mean if someone misunderstands us or takes offense at something we say.
