Sunan Ibn Majah 3632 (Book 32, Hadith 83) #32986
Following the Practices of People of the Book

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) preferred to follow the practices of the People of the Book, and so he let his forelock hang down before parting it.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "The People of the Book used to let their hair hang down, and the idolaters used to part their hair. The Messenger of Allah liked to be more like the People of the Book. So the Messenger of Allah let his forelock hang down, then after that he parted it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for all religions, Learning from others’ practices

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ liked to follow in line with what was practiced by people from other faiths. He chose to let his forelock hang down, which was a practice among those who followed Judaism and Christianity. After that, he parted his hair in a different style which was more common among idolaters. This hadith teaches us that we should be respectful towards all religions and not discriminate against any group or faith. We should also strive to learn from each other's practices as long as they are not contrary to Islamic teachings.
