Cleanliness, Good Life and Martyrdom

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged Umar to wear clean clothes, live a good life and strive for martyrdom.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah saw 'Umar wearing a white shirt and he said: "Is this garment of yours washed or a new one?" He said: "Rather it has been washed". He said: "Ilbas jadida, wa 'ish hamida, wa mut shahida (May you wear new clothes, live a good life and die as martyr)".
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَنْبَأَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ ـ رَأَى عَلَى عُمَرَ قَمِيصًا أَبْيَضَ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ ثَوْبُكَ هَذَا غَسِيلٌ أَمْ جَدِيدٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ بَلْ غَسِيلٌ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ الْبَسْ جَدِيدًا وَعِشْ حَمِيدًا وَمُتْ شَهِيدًا

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of cleanliness, living a good life and striving for martyrdom. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saw Umar wearing a white shirt and asked if it was washed or new. When Umar said it was washed, the Prophet Muhammad blessed him with “Ilbas jadida, wa 'ish hamida, wa mut shahida” which translates to “May you wear new clothes, live a good life and die as martyr”. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to be clean in our appearance as well as our actions. We should also aim to lead an honorable life by doing what is right according to Islamic teachings so that we can be rewarded in the afterlife. Lastly, we should strive for martyrdom by sacrificing ourselves in order to protect our faith or country if necessary.
