Sunan Ibn Majah 3555 (Book 32, Hadith 6) #32909
Generosity of the Prophet ﷺ

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ accepted a woven sheet from a woman and wore it as a lower wrap. When another man asked for it, the Prophet ﷺ gave it to him, and the man said he wanted to use it as his shroud when he died.

It was narrated from Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah with a woven sheet – he said: * "What type of woven sheet?" He said: "A Shamlah". She said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have woven this with my own hands for you to wear". The Messenger of Allah took it, since he needed it. He came out to us wearing it as a lower wrap. So-and-so the son of so-and-so". – a man whose name he told that day – said: "O Messenger of Allah, how beautiful this sheet is! Let me wear it". He said: "Yes". When he went inside he folded it up and sent it to him. The people said to him: "By Allah, you have not done well. The Prophet wore it because he needed it, then you asked for it, and you knew that he would not refuse anyone who asked him for something". He said: "By Allah, I did not ask for it so that I could wear it, rather I asked for it so that it could be my shroud". Sahl said: "And it became his shroud the day he died".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous towards others even if you are not well off yourself .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the generosity of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. A woman came to him with a woven sheet called Shamlah which she had made with her own hands as a gift for him. He accepted her gift and wore it as a lower wrap. Later on, another man asked if he could have it and instead of refusing him, the Prophet ﷺ gave away his gift without hesitation. The people around were surprised at this act of generosity but then they found out that this man wanted to use this sheet as his shroud when he died one day in future. This shows us how generous our beloved prophet was even though he himself was in need of things like clothes etc., yet he never hesitated in giving away whatever little possessions he had to those who asked for them from him. It also teaches us that we should be generous towards others even if we are not well off ourselves because Allah will reward us greatly for our good deeds no matter how small they may seem at first glance.
