Purification and Permissibility of Sea Water and Dead Meat

SUMMARY: The water of the sea is a means of purification and its dead meat is permissible.

Mughirah bin Abu Burdah, who was of the tribe of Banu 'Abd-Dar, narrated that he heard Abu Hurairah say: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'The water of the sea is a means of purification and its dead meat is permissible.’"
حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ، حَدَّثَنِي صَفْوَانُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ، مِنْ آلِ ابْنِ الأَزْرَقِ أَنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، - وَهُوَ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الدَّارِ - حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ، سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ الْبَحْرُ الطَّهُورُ مَاؤُهُ الْحِلُّ مَيْتَتُهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بَلَغَنِي عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ الْجَوَادِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ هَذَا نِصْفُ الْعِلْمِ لأَنَّ الدُّنْيَا بَرٌّ وَبَحْرٌ فَقَدْ أَفْتَاكَ فِي الْبَحْرِ وَبَقِيَ الْبَرُّ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the purifying properties of sea water and the permissibility of consuming dead meat from it. It was narrated by Mughirah bin Abu Burdah who heard it from Abu Hurairah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that sea water can be used for purifying oneself as well as consuming dead meat found in it is permissible. This hadith teaches us to be mindful when using natural resources such as sea water for our own benefit while also being conscious about what we consume from it. We should take care not to pollute or contaminate these resources so that they remain available for future generations to use in a safe manner. Additionally, this hadith reminds us to be mindful when consuming food items from any source so that we do not harm ourselves or others with what we eat or drink.
