Sunan Ibn Majah 3192 (Book 27, Hadith 31) #32546
Forbidden Consumption of Donkey Meat

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ forbade the consumption of donkey meat due to its habit of eating excrement.

It was narrated that Abu Ishaq Shaibani said: "I asked 'Abdullah bin Abu Awfa about the flesh of domesticated donkeys and he said: 'We were starving on the Day of Khaibar, when we were with the Prophet . The people had gotten some donkeys as spoils of war on the way out from Al-Madinah, so we slaughtered them and our cooking pots were boiling when the caller of the Messenger of Allah cried out, telling us to overturn out pots and not to eat anything of the flesh of donkeys. So we overturned them.’ I said to 'Abdullah bin Abu Awfa: 'Was it made unlawful?’ He said: 'We think that the Messenger of Allah forbade it altogether because it eats excrement.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet's prohibition on consuming donkey meat. During a journey, some people got donkeys as spoils of war and decided to slaughter them for food. However, before they could eat it, the caller of the Messenger of Allah cried out that they should overturn their pots and not consume any donkey meat. When asked why this was forbidden, 'Abdullah bin Abu Awfa said that it was because donkeys eat excrement which makes it unfit for human consumption. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful about what we consume and make sure that our food is clean and healthy before eating it. It also shows us how important hygiene is in Islam as well as how much attention Muslims must pay to what they put into their bodies in order to stay healthy and pure.
