Sunan Ibn Majah 3181 (Book 27, Hadith 20) #32535
Avoid Slaughtering Lactating Animals

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised Abu Bakr and Umar to avoid slaughtering lactating animals.

Abu Hurairah narrated that Abu Bakr bin Abu Quhafah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said to him and to 'Umar: "Let us go out to Waqifi". He said: "So we went out in the moonlight until we came to the garden and he (the owner of the garden) said: 'Welcome.’ Then he took up the knife and went among the sheep (to choose one for slaughter), and the Messenger of Allah said: 'Avoid those that are lactating.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind towards all living creatures, Strive for humanely-sourced food which does not involve cruelty or suffering of any kind towards animals or other living creatures .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's advice to his companions, Abu Bakr and Umar, when they went out to Waqifi. Waqifi was a garden where they were going to slaughter an animal for food. When they arrived at the garden, the owner of the garden welcomed them and took up a knife to choose an animal for slaughter. At this point, the Prophet Muhammad advised them not to choose any lactating animals as it would be cruel and against Islamic teachings of kindness towards animals. This hadith teaches us that we should be kind towards all living creatures even if it means sacrificing our own needs or desires in order to do so. We should also strive not only for halal food but also for humanely-sourced food which does not involve cruelty or suffering of any kind towards animals or other living creatures.
