Sunan Ibn Majah 3178 (Book 27, Hadith 17) #32532
Eating with Etiquette on a Journey

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that when on a journey, one should use whatever causes the blood to flow, mention the Name of Allah and eat, but not use teeth or nails.

It was narrated that Rafi’ bin Khadij said: "We were with the Prophet on a journey, and I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we are (sometimes) on military campaigns, and we have no knife with us.’ He said: '(Use) whatever causes the blood to flow, mention the Name of Allah and eat, but (do not use) teeth or nails, for the tooth is a bone and the nail is the knife of the Ethiopians".

QUICK LESSONS:
Use whatever causes the blood to flow , Mention Allah's name before eating

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about how to eat while on a journey. The Prophet ﷺ instructed us to use whatever causes the blood to flow when slaughtering an animal for food, such as a knife or sharp object. He also taught us to mention the name of Allah before eating and not to use our teeth or nails as they are considered impolite and unhygienic. This hadith also teaches us about etiquette in general; it is important for Muslims to be mindful of their manners even when away from home.
