Hunting for the Prophet

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions went on a journey to Hudaibiyah, and the narrator's father hunted a donkey for them. The Prophet (ﷺ) allowed his companions to eat it, but he himself did not partake in it.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah that his father said: "I went out with the Messenger of Allah at the time of Hudaibiyah, and his Companions entered Ihram, but I did not. I saw a donkey do I hunted it. I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah and told him: 'I had not entered Ihram, and I was hunting it for you.’ The Prophet told his Companions to eat it, but he did not eat from it, because I told him that I had hunted it for him".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your possessions; Share what you have with others; Show appreciation towards those who do good deeds for you; Respect those around you

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the journey of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions to Hudaibiyah. On this journey, 'Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah's father hunted a donkey for them. The Prophet ﷺ allowed his companions to eat from it, but he himself did not partake in it as he was aware that it was hunted specifically for him. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous with our possessions and share what we have with others even if we ourselves do not benefit from it directly. It also teaches us that when someone does something good or kind for us, we should show our appreciation by thanking them or acknowledging their efforts in some way. Finally, this hadith shows us how much respect the Prophet ﷺ had for those around him; even though he could have eaten from the donkey himself, he chose instead to let others benefit from its meat first out of respect and kindness towards them.
