Sunan Ibn Majah 3057 (Book 25, Hadith 176) #32411
Protecting Wealth and Blood in Sacred Times

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of protecting one's wealth and blood, as well as the consequences of introducing innovations after the Prophet (ﷺ) has passed away.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Mas’ud said: "The Messenger of Allah said, when he was atop his camel with the clipped ears in 'Arafat: 'Do you know what day this is, what month this is and what land this is?’ They said: 'This is a sacred land, a sacred month and a sacred day.’ He said: 'Your wealth and your blood are sacred to you as this month of yours, in this land of yours, on this day of yours. I will reach the Cistern (Hawd) before you, and I will be proud of your great numbers before the nations, so do not blacken my face (ie, cause me to be ashamed). I will rescue some people, and some people will be taken away from me. I will say: "O Lord, my companions!" and He will say: "You do not know what innovations they introduced after you were gone.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect life & property ; Preserve faith ; Be proud of numbers & unity ; Be accountable for actions taken after death .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was atop his camel with clipped ears in 'Arafat when he asked his companions what day, month, and land it was. They replied that it was a sacred day, month, and land. He then said that their wealth and blood were just as sacred to them as this day, month, and land were to them. He also warned them not to cause him shame by introducing innovations after he had passed away because he would be proud of their great numbers before other nations. The Prophet ﷺ then said that some people would be taken away from him while others would be rescued by him at the Cistern or Hawd before they reached it themselves. Lastly, Allah will ask him if he knows what innovations they introduced after he left which shows how important it is for us to stay true to our faith even when we are no longer being guided by our beloved Prophet ﷺ .
