Sunan Ibn Majah 3013 (Book 25, Hadith 132) #32367
The Power of Prayer & Forgiveness

SUMMARY: This hadith tells us that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) prayed for forgiveness for his nation and Allah responded by forgiving them, except for the wrongdoers. The Prophet then asked Allah to forgive the wrongdoers and grant Paradise to those who were wronged. When Iblis heard of this, he was filled with anguish and despair which made the Prophet laugh.

'Abdullah bin Kinanah bin 'Abbas bin Mirdas As-Sulami narrated that his father told him, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah prayed for forgiveness for his nation one evening at 'Arafat, and the response came: "I have forgiven them, except for the wrongdoer, with whom I will settle the score in favor of the one whom he wronged". He said: "O Lord, if You will, then grant Paradise to the one who is wronged, and forgive the wrongdoer". No response came (that evening). The next day at Muzdalifah he repeated the supplication, and received a response to what he asked for. He (the narrator) said: "The Messenger of Allah laughed," or he said, "He smiled. Abu Bakr and 'Umar said to him: 'May my father and mother be ransomed for you, this is not a time when you usually laugh. What made you laugh, may Allah make your years filled with laughter?’ He said: 'The enemy of Allah, Iblis, when he came to know that Allah answered my prayer and forgiven my nation, took some dust and started to sprinkle it on his head, uttering cries of woe and doom, and what I saw of his anguish made me laugh.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the power of prayer and forgiveness in Islam. It is narrated that one evening at 'Arafat, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prayed for forgiveness for his nation and received a response from Allah that He has forgiven them except for those who have done wrong deeds. The Prophet then asked Allah to forgive even these people as well as grant Paradise to those who were wronged but no response came on that day. However, when he repeated this supplication at Muzdalifah, he received a response from Allah granting him what he asked for which made him laugh or smile in joy. On asking why did he laugh or smile when it was not usual of him during such times, he replied saying it was because Iblis was filled with anguish upon hearing this news which made him sprinkle dust on his head out of despair which amused the prophet making him laugh or smile in joy knowing that all his people have been forgiven by God Almighty! This hadith teaches us about how powerful our prayers are if we make them sincerely with faith in God's mercy and compassion towards His creation! It also teaches us about how merciful our Lord is towards His creation even if they have done something bad; He still gives them chances to repent and be forgiven!
