Completing Hajj and 'Umrah Without Sacrifices

SUMMARY: This hadith narrates the story of 'Aishah and her journey with the Prophet (ﷺ) on the Farewell Pilgrimage. She was not able to perform 'Umrah due to being in menses, but was later enabled by Allah to complete both Hajj and 'Umrah without a sacrificial animal, charity or fasting.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Farewell Pilgrimage, close to the time of the crescent of Dhul-Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever among you wants to begin the Talbiyah for 'Umrah, let him do so. If it were not for the fact that I have brought a sacrificial animal with me, I would have began the Talbiyah for 'Umrah.’" She said: "Some of the people began the Talbiyah for 'Umrah, and some began the Talbiyah for Hajj. I was one of those who began the Talbiyah for 'Umrah". She said: "We set out until we reached Makkah, then the Day of 'Arafah came while I was in menses, but I did not exit Ihram for 'Umrah I complained about that to the Prophet ﷺ and he said: 'Leave your 'Umrah, undo your hair and comb it, and begin the Talbiyah for Hajj.’" She said: "So I did that, then on the night of Hasbah (ie, the twelfth night of Dhul-Hijjah), when Allah had enables us to complete our Hajj, he sent 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr with me. He seated me behind him and went out to Tan’im, then I began the Talbiyah for 'Umrah and Allah enabled us to complete our Hajj and 'Umrah, and there was no sacrificial animal, charity nor fasting".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ ﷺ ـ فِي حِجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ نُوَافِي هِلاَلَ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ﷺ ـ ‏"‏ مَنْ أَرَادَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يُهِلَّ بِعُمْرَةٍ فَلْيُهْلِلْ فَلَوْلاَ أَنِّي أَهْدَيْتُ لأَهْلَلْتُ بِعُمْرَةٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَتْ فَكَانَ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ مَنْ أَهَلَّ بِعُمْرَةٍ وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ أَهَلَّ بِحَجٍّ فَكُنْتُ أَنَا مِمَّنْ أَهَلَّ بِعُمْرَةٍ ‏.‏ قَالَتْ فَخَرَجْنَا حَتَّى قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ فَأَدْرَكَنِي يَوْمُ عَرَفَةَ وَأَنَا حَائِضٌ لَمْ أَحِلَّ مِنْ عُمْرَتِي فَشَكَوْتُ ذَلِكَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ـ ﷺ ـ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ دَعِي عُمْرَتَكِ وَانْقُضِي رَأْسَكِ وَامْتَشِطِي وَأَهِلِّي بِالْحَجِّ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَتْ فَفَعَلْتُ فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ الْحَصْبَةِ وَقَدْ قَضَى اللَّهُ حَجَّنَا أَرْسَلَ مَعِي عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَأَرْدَفَنِي وَخَرَجَ إِلَى التَّنْعِيمِ فَأَهْلَلْتُ بِعُمْرَةٍ فَقَضَى اللَّهُ حَجَّنَا وَعُمْرَتَنَا وَلَمْ يَكُنْ فِي ذَلِكَ هَدْىٌ وَلاَ صَدَقَةٌ وَلاَ صَوْمٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates an event from the life of Aisha, one of Prophet Muhammad's wives. During their Farewell Pilgrimage, Aisha wanted to perform Umrah but she was in her menses so she could not do it. The Prophet advised her to undo her hair and comb it before beginning Talbiyah for Hajj instead. Later on during their journey, Allah enabled them to complete both Hajj and Umrah without any sacrifices or fasting required from them. This hadith teaches us that Allah is merciful and generous; He can grant us blessings even when we are unable to fulfill certain obligations due to circumstances beyond our control. It also shows us how important it is for Muslims who are able, physically and financially, to make pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime as a way of expressing gratitude towards God for His blessings upon them.
