The Significance of Sa'y Between Safa and Marwah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was seen performing the Sa'y between Safa and Marwah, and he instructed that the valley should not be crossed except quickly.

It was narratd that an Umm Walad* of Shaibah said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah performing Sa’y between Safa and Marwah saying: 'The valley should not be crossed except quickly.’"
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ الدَّسْتَوَائِيُّ، عَنْ بُدَيْلِ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ، عَنْ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ شَيْبَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ وَلَدِ، شَيْبَةَ قَالَتْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ ـ يَسْعَى بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ لاَ يُقْطَعُ الأَبْطَحُ إِلاَّ شَدًّا

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith is about an important ritual in Islam known as the Sa’y. This ritual is performed by Muslims during their pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj. During this ritual, pilgrims walk seven times between two hills called Safa and Marwa. This hadith tells us that when performing this ritual, it is important to do it quickly without taking too much time in between each lap. It also teaches us that we should always follow the instructions of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him in all matters related to our faith. Furthermore, it reminds us of how important Hajj is for Muslims and how we should strive to perform it if we are able to do so.
