The Dangers of a Dishonest Troop

SUMMARY: This hadith warns against the dangers of being part of a group that flees when faced with an enemy and steals from spoils of war.

It was narrated that Lahi’ah bin 'Uqbah said: "I heard Abul-Ward, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah , say: 'Beware of the troop which, when it meets (the enemy) it flees, and when it takes spoils of war, it steals from it.’"
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، عَنِ ابْنِ لَهِيعَةَ، أَخْبَرَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ لَهِيعَةَ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْوَرْدِ، صَاحِبَ النَّبِيِّ يَقُولُ إِيَّاكُمْ وَالسَّرِيَّةَ الَّتِي إِنْ لَقِيَتْ فَرَّتْ وَإِنْ غَنِمَتْ غَلَّتْ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns against joining a dishonest troop. It was narrated by Lahiah bin 'Uqbah who heard Abul-Ward, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah say that one should be wary of any troop which flees when it meets an enemy and steals from spoils taken in battle. This hadith teaches us to be careful about who we associate ourselves with and to make sure we are not partaking in any dishonesty or wrongdoings. We should strive to be honest and just in all our dealings so as not to bring shame upon ourselves or our community.
