Sunan Ibn Majah 2778 (Book 24, Hadith 26) #32132
Rewards for Martyrs at Sea

SUMMARY: The hadith speaks of the rewards for martyrs at sea, and how Allah forgives their sins and debts.

It was narrated that Sulaim bin 'Amr said: I heard Abu Umamah saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: "The martyr at sea is like two martyrs on land, and the one who suffers seasickness is like one who gets drenched in his own blood on land. The time spent between one wave and the next is like a lifetime spent in obedience to Allah. Allah has appointed the Angel of Death to seize souls, except for the martyr at sea, for Allah Himself seizes their souls. He forgives the martyrs on land for all sins except debt, but (He forgives) the martyr at sea all his sins and his debt".

QUICK LESSONS:
Spend time between waves obediently worshipping God .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the rewards that are given to those who are martyred at sea. It is said that they are like two martyrs on land, and those who suffer seasickness are like one who gets drenched in his own blood on land. The time spent between one wave and the next is seen as a lifetime spent in obedience to Allah, which is a great reward in itself. Furthermore, it is said that Allah has appointed the Angel of Death to seize souls except for those martyred at sea; instead, Allah Himself seizes their souls and forgives them all their sins as well as any debt they may have owed. This shows us how much reward there can be for sacrificing oneself in service to God even if it's something seemingly small such as seasickness or spending time between waves obediently worshipping Him.
