Sunan Ibn Majah 2691 (Book 21, Hadith 77) #32045
Forgiveness is Better than Revenge

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised a man to forgive the killer of his relative, and when he refused, the Prophet advised him to take blood money instead. When he refused that too, the Prophet said "Go and kill him, but then you will be like him." The man eventually let go of his anger and forgave the killer.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: "A man brought the killer of his relative to the Messenger of Allah and the Messenger of Allah said: 'Pardon him,' but the refused. He said: 'Take the blood money,' but he refused. He said: 'Go and kill him, but then you will be like him.’ Someone caught up with him and reminded him that the Messenger of Allah had said: 'Go and kill him, but then you will be like him.’ So he let him go. He said: So he was seen dragging his strap going to his family. He said: It seemed that he had tied him up. It's narrated that AbdurRahman bin AlQasim said "Then it is not (permissible) for anyone after the Prophet to say 'Go and kill him, but then you will be like him'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how it is better to forgive someone than to seek revenge. It was narrated by Anas bin Malik that a man brought the killer of his relative to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised this man to pardon him but he refused. He then suggested taking blood money as compensation for what happened but again, this was rejected by the aggrieved person. Finally, in an attempt to make him realize how wrong it would be for him to take revenge into his own hands, he said “Go and kill him” - implying that if he did so then he would become just like his relative's murderer himself. However, someone caught up with this person before anything could happen and reminded them of what they were about do - which made them realize their mistake and they let go of their anger towards their relative's murderer instead. AbdurRahman bin AlQasim later commented on this incident saying that no one should ever say “Go and kill him” after hearing what happened here as it goes against Islamic teachings on forgiveness.
