Sunan Ibn Majah 2649 (Book 21, Hadith 35) #32003
Intercession in Retaliation

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a woman who broke the tooth of a girl and her family asked for compensation, but the other family refused. Prophet Muhammad then ordered retaliation, but Anas bin Nadr interceded on behalf of the woman and asked that her tooth not be broken. The Prophet accepted his intercession and both families forgave each other.

It was narrated that Anas said: "Rubai, the paternal aunt of Anas, broke the tooth of a girl and they (her family) asked (the girl's family) to let her off, but they refused. They offered to pay compensatory money, but they refused. So they came to Prophet who ordered retaliation. Anas bin Nadr said: 'O Messenger of Allah , will the tooth of Rubai' be broken? By the One Who sent you with the truth, it will not be broken!' The Prophet said: 'O Anas, what Allah has decreed is retaliation'. So the people accepted that and forgave her. The Messenger of Allah said: 'there are among the slaves of Allah those who, if they swear by Allah, Allah fulfills their oath'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of interceding on behalf of others when they are wronged or have committed an offense. In this case, Anas bin Nadr interceded on behalf of Rubai's aunt who had broken the tooth of a girl. He asked that her tooth not be broken in retaliation as it was customary at that time to do so for such offenses. However, Prophet Muhammad accepted his plea and instead both families forgave each other without any further action being taken against Rubai's aunt. This teaches us to always stand up for justice even if it means going against societal norms or customs as long as it does not contradict Islamic teachings or laws. It also shows us how important forgiveness is in Islam and how we should strive to forgive those who wrong us instead of seeking revenge or retribution which can lead to further animosity between people or groups.
